Lancaster Petroleum held public hearings on the environment impact assessment for construction of its new exploration wells on Kokzhide oilfield. Held on 12 June in Kenkiyak, the public hearing was attended by representatives of government institutions, regional representatives of the Ministry of environment protection as well as independent experts. Environmental engineers of AktyubNIGRI JSC and BatysEcoProekt LLP presented their findings regarding the construction of exploration wells. According to their findings, the project will have a low and temporary environmental impact. “Our company has always been open and constructive about the issues of environment protection. Measures are taken every year to ease impact on the environment from extraction activities, and we are pleased to say that contamination from our wells is very minimal”, said Lancaster Petroleum technical director, Talgat Ismagulov.

Premier Central Asian business event of 2008 coincided with the 10th anniversary of the capital city of Astana. Co-organized with the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Keleshek Kazakhstan, the conference took a closer look at key investment challenges and issues of economic reform and growth as Kazakhstan prepares for accession to the World Trade Organization.

According to the study by Kursiv newspaper, KIB is the leading bank in attracting term deposits of individuals in 1Q 2008. Deposit base of individual clients of the bank grew by over 370% in the first quarter of 2008 and totaled 9 615 171 thousand tenge. The growth of retail deposits of other banks in the same period averaged at around 13.6% while some of the banks closed the first quarter with significant negative growth in deposit base. The growth of deposits is primarily attributable to the recent launch of Priority Banking business that provides services to high wealth individuals kicked off in late 2007 as part of KIB’s strategy in Consumer business segment. Such substantial boost in deposits demonstrates the success of bank’s strategy in consumer banking despite very competitive environment.
KIB is ranked 14th among banks of Kazakhstan in terms of assets with 70 178 714 thousand tenge as of April 1, 2008.

IPNet is the only satellite network operators in Russia to make into rating of prestigious magazine “Expert” following the performance results of 2007. The company has been rated the 7th of top ten Russian telecommunication leaders and the 70th of the largest information and communication technology companies.

On 28 April ERSAI Caspian Contractor granted medical equipment at 2.1 mln tenge to a regional hospital of Kuryk, Mangystau region. Purchased on request of the hospital’s management, “Phase-5” is a device used for artificial and assisted lung ventilation and inhalation anesthesia. Chief Doctor of the hospital, Mr. Toleshev thanked ERSAI representatives for the long-awaited equipment. “Our current lung ventilation machine could not be used as widely as Phase-5 which is an advanced machine that can be used for all patients including children”, said Mr. Toleshev.
To address social issues of the Mangystau region, ERSAI Caspian Contractor regularly provides financial assistance and has allocated 15 mln tenge for the implementation of its Sustainable Development programme in 2008.


KUN Renewables held public hearing of environmental impact assessment of its polysilicon plant construction project on 23 April in Astana.
The plant with initial production of 2500 tpy silicon will be built in the industrial park of Astana city and is due to be completed in 2009. To produce polysilicon in Kazakhsyan KUN Renewables plans to employ environmentally safe Siemens technology whose fundamental distinction is recirculation and full regeneration of after-products. The use of advanced technology and equipment will allow minimal environmental impact. Initiated by Lancaster Group, KUN Renewables is a breakthrough project that will significantly contribute to the industrial and innovation development of Astana city.

IPNet is the first satellite network operators in Russia to become an official member of international association TMForum. TMForum is an international non-profit organization that brings together 600 network operators, vendors, service providers and systems integrators, and provides best opportunities for collaboration and practical skills exchange.

The Keleshek Kazakhstan Public Foundation and Lancaster Group are supporting the “Nauryz with Roksonaki” project organized and implemented by the Central Asian Cultural Exchange of Washington, DC with support of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the US.

“Nauryz with Roksonaki”  will tour the avantgarde/neotraditionalist Kazakhstan music group Roksonaki to six prestigious US universities in March-April 2008. The participating universities include Stony Brook University, Northeastern Illinois University, Stanford University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

An innovative cultural educational program, Nauryz with Roksonaki is designed to teach American audiences about the rich cultural diversity of Central Asia. The tour will culminate in a magnificent Gala Nauryz Celebration in Washington, DC on April 5, organized in collaboration with the Kazakhstan Embassy.

Public hearings on “ERSAI Caspian Yard expansion” took place on February 26 in Kuryk, Mangistau Oblast. According to Mr Yan Chan, ERSAI Deputy General Director, the decision to expand was made last year. Following oil and gas market research findings, the company has decided to increase and modernize the yard capacities. Expansion of the yard involves the construction of 29 sites, including warehouses, workshops and offices. The company is also planning to expand offshore structures.

Nurlan Kapparov, Chairman of Lancaster Group, took part in the Republican Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility on the 24th of January in Zhezkazgan (Central Kazakhstan). Participated by the President of Kazakhstan, high level government officials, leading national companies, as well as international and public organizations, the forum was aimed at discussing current situation and developing a model of corporate social responsibility in Kazakhstan.

Jambyl Public Foundation, represented by Mr Kapparov, signed Memorandum on mutual cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Akimat (city administration) of the East Kazakhstan region. This agreement initiates construction of a regional rehabilitation centre for children in Urdzhar (East Kazakhstan). The centre is scheduled to be completed and fully equipped in 2008-2009.


IPNet will build a new teleport based on the HUGHES HX platform. The new teleport will be located close to the company’s current Central hub in the MGU technopark. Total investment in this project will be around 50 mln roubles. The company plans to have the new teleport up and running by the second quarter of 2008.

Developed by the HUGHES company, HX is the latest generation of VSAT systems. IPNet is one of the first satellite telecom operators to use the latest generation satellite technologies HX in its service offerings.
